Birthstones have long been cherished for their symbolism, said to reflect not only the month of one’s birth but also the unique energies of that time. Each stone holds a story, a history, and a special resonance that deepens in its designated month. For those born in June, the luminous pearl is your celestial companion — an emblem of purity, wisdom, and serenity.

What Are Pearls?

Pearls

Unlike any other gemstone, pearls are the only ones formed within a living creature. They originate in shelled molluscs, created when a microscopic irritant becomes encased in layers of aragonite, a crystalline form of calcium carbonate. This natural process forms a pearl as a defence mechanism that turns into something rare and beautiful. The most prized pearls are perfectly round and smooth, though many exhibit more organic shapes, known as baroque pearls.

Natural vs. Cultured Pearls

The distinction between wild (natural) and cultured pearls lies in how they are formed. Natural pearls develop without human intervention and are incredibly rare, often featuring a brownish core surrounded by luminous nacre — the substance that gives pearls their characteristic iridescent glow. Cultured pearls, while also genuine, begin with a small bead or tissue inserted into the mollusc by skilled hands. Over time, the mollusc coats the bead with nacre, resulting in a pearl that is visually and chemically similar to its wild counterpart.

Types Of Cultured Pearls

Types of pearls

Freshwater Pearls

Cultivated primarily in lakes and rivers, freshwater pearls are known for their variety and affordability. They appear in a stunning array of hues, including white, pink, lavender, and apricot, and typically range from 4mm to 14mm in size. Though more abundant, their beauty and versatility make them a perennial favourite.

Akoya Pearls

Grown off the coast of Japan, Akoya pearls are a classic choice for jewellery, revered for their perfectly round shape and radiant lustre. Sizes typically range from 4mm to 10mm, and while traditionally white, subtle hues and baroque variations can also occur.

Tahitian Pearls

Hailing from the pristine waters of French Polynesia, Tahitian pearls are the only pearls that occur naturally in dark tones. They can display a rich palette of colours — from deep greens and purples to silvery greys. These pearls come in various shapes, such as drop, oval, and baroque.

South Sea Pearls

Among the largest and most luxurious of all pearls, South Sea pearls are cultivated in the warm waters of Australia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Their hues range from opulent white to deep, golden tones. These pearls grow to impressive sizes — between 8mm and 18mm — and are often found in drop, oval, or baroque forms. Perfectly round South Sea pearls are exceptionally rare, making them highly coveted.

Pearls Through Time

Revered for centuries, pearls have been a symbol of grace and status. Coco Chanel famously layered them in bold strands, proclaiming that "a woman needs ropes and ropes of pearls." Today, pearls are enjoying a renaissance — adorning modern fashion runways, worn by famous figures, and seamlessly blending into contemporary jewellery design.
